2. Subcultures as active consumers
The teddy boys/girls of the 1960's
Ken Russell - photography/ film
Being different/ out there
Crossing every taboo of women
Alternative lifestyles, see it/ visual intervention
The Teddy Boys/Girls
Had jobs that they would spend in pubs/ clubs etc at the weekend. They were unconventional, liking to express themselves in public places e.g the cinema, which was frowned upon. Not hiding away!! They wore alot of old things/ from thrift stores mixed with the new (Bricolage - creative use of commodities by changing the original context of things).
Changing hair - short for girls, things bough out of a consumer culture - mash up! Allowed to behave in a different kind of way. Sex, drugs and hanging out at night. There was split sides of whether people thought that this was hedonistic or productive? They needed room to breath and music was at the heart of subculture, jazz and rock & roll - moving the hips seen as sexual.
Punk - 1970's
Period of high unemployment, all thats left is a lot of attitude, behaviour. The more this subculture was photographed the more attention it got and backfired on the parent culture. It wasn't just the dress but the whole language break-up of children/parent culture and subculture becoming mainstream.
Jamie Reid - dropped out of art collage and is responsible for designing the sex pistols art work. The sex pistols song released on the queens jubilee was banned on radio 1. The episode on the today show made them appear as rock cult filth as it shocked the nation due to people not swearing on tv prior to this.
